What’s up guys! Today we’re doing a review of the Amazonbasics mattress.
That’s right Amazon actually has their own mattress. So this guy’s going head-to-head with Tuft & Needle and Zinus which are probably the two best selling mattresses on Amazon. But for today’s post what we’re going to do is we’re going to cover what we like and don’t like about this bed, then at the end we’ll talk about who we think it is best for.
Let’s get to it!
ABOUT AMAZONBASICS MATTRESS
Okay so as you would expect, this is a bed in a box mattress, meaning it’s shipped compressed actually rolled up inside plastic wrapping and then shoved inside a box. All you do is just rip off all the packaging and you have an entire mattress. It’s actually pretty cool. We’ve unbox like probably almost 90 beds now. It’s actually a lot of fun if you haven’t done it before. If you end up getting a bed, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. It’s pretty cool experience.
Anyways it shows up in a box and given that it is an Amazon product. They’re targeting value, they’re trying to keep the price low and just get you a mattress. It’s made in China. The 10 inch foam mattress under two hundred and fifty dollars for a queen-size, super affordable. But given the price you’re not gonna get all the bells and whistles that you would get with a lot of other mattresses.
For instance, returns of mattresses on Amazon are sort of wonky. I actually don’t even know the full policy from Amazon. I think you’ll get one mattress return lifetime per account, not exactly sure how that works. You don’t get a hundred night trial with it. It’s just Amazon standard returns, I believe.
On top of that this bed has a 10-year, nope, it has a one-year warranty. Just one year with this bed. Most beds we trial, I would say 95% of beds that we’ve tried out, they’re at least 10 year warranties. So this is nine years less than most beds out there but it makes sense. They’re trying to keep the price low and get you a super affordable bed so they don’t back it with a really long warranty.
That’s the basic stuff, pun absolutely intended.
Now as for the construction of the bed, it will be the same pretty much regardless of which size you get. If you get the 8 inch bed, the 10 inch bed or the 12 inch bed, it pretty much has a very similar construction.
Obviously the thicknesses vary a little bit but by and large, you have three different layers so you’re gonna start off with a dense layer of poly film. It’s actually convoluted foam on the bottom which really isn’t known for being very durable. In fact, it’s one of the less durable foams out there, constructions of foams out there. You have that dense layer on the bottom, Amazon’s calling it hard foam. I guess just for simplicity sake. Then you have a transition layer so you don’t feel that layer and on top you have a thin layer of memory foam. So just three layers regardless of whether you get the 8 inch the 10 inch of the 12 inch.
Now the cover for the bed it’s made of mostly polyester. It’s nice and soft, nothing special to it but there is a difference between what you see on Amazon and what you see on the tags. On Amazon they tell you that it’s removable, that you can wash it, it’s a little vague. But when you actually read the tag, it says do not wash, do not tumble dry.
I take that to mean you should just spot clean the bed even though it has a removable cover. Don’t wash it, just spot clean it with a little bit of warm water and mild detergent, just hand clean it.
Now as for how the mattress actually feels. Because that’s super important despite the fact that it has memory foam, it only has a hint of memory foam. You can tell it has a little bit of memory foam but there’s no stuck in the mud feeling. It doesn’t have a prototypical memory foam feel, it’s actually a little bit more airy, a little bit more neutral. So yes, it’s a memory foam bed but it doesn’t have that dreadful prototypical memory foam feel.
As for firmness, it’s about a flat medium so it’s not super soft, not super firm. If like you want a firm or a soft bed, that’s not this one. They are trying to get as many people as possible to get the bed so they don’t really want to play at the margins, they want to be right in the center.
Let’s say you’re 230 250 275 pounds, these are not going to be the best beds for you whether you get the 8 inch or the 1 inch. They’re made entirely of foam just like Casper, Leesa or Tuft & Needle and that’s really not who they’re targeting.
As well as for couples, I actually think this will be a pretty good bed for couples based on two things. It has an accommodating feel like I mentioned before. It doesn’t have an overwhelming memory-foam feel, I could see two people easily saying “Yeah, I find this comfortable”. So I think it’ll be okay from that sense, it’s a really accommodating feel.
The fact that it’s pretty good at isolating motion like most all foam beds are. Most of them are pretty good and this one does a good job of deadening movement. It’s not the best we’ve ever seen but it’s pretty good.
The edge support is not great. It’s a tall foam bed so if you get a twin XL, full or queen and you end up writing the edges the perimeter of the bed, you will get a little bit out roll-off sensation. It’s pretty normal for a softer foam bed to do that but it’s not great. I would just say the two highlights for couples would be good motion isolation and accommodating feel.
Now the last thing I want to talk about it’s temperature regulation. Amazon has a bunch of fancy talk about pinholes and all this air flow and stuff. For us, we didn’t find it particularly cool or particularly hot. It was more of like a neutral feeling bed, it wasn’t a cooling bed. It doesn’t warm up like Zinus does. It’s kind of right in the middle, reminds us a little bit of Leesa or Tuft & Needle.
So that’s the AmazonBasics mattress.
Amazonbasics IS BEST FOR…
There’s not a whole lot to it but I do think there are some people that will absolutely love this bed and the people that I think it is best for.
I would say number one is college students. You want a and affordable bed and you want it to be accommodating. You probably don’t care about the bells and whistles. The other thing is kids and teenagers. I could see this being a really nice bed for them because you have a couple of different thicknesses. You can get an eight inch bed for kids, You can get a 10 or 12 inch bed for teenagers or anybody that’s a little bit bigger. I think it’s a good kids and teens bed.
It is all the foams, despite the fact that it’s made in China, they are certiPUR-US approved which means they’re made without a lot of harsh chemicals. Most beds you’ll buy, in fact I think every single bed, you’ll buy in the US they have to be certiPUR-US certified or something like that. Most of them will be this one. So I think it’s fine for kids, fine for teens.
I also think it’ll be a nice bed for RVs, for car camping and also truck beds. If you just want an affordable bed and you want to be a little bit thinner, this is gonna be a really good bed for that purpose.
The last thing is kind of like a catch-all. If you’re on a strict budget, there are only and maybe a handful of beds that I think are in that worth buying category and this would probably be in that. So if the price is key, that’s one reason you would get this bed. After all, AmazonBasics brand has done incredibly well, I saw somewhere that it’s a multi-billion dollar brand and now they make mattresses.
