Leesa vs Purple | Ultimate Mattress Review Guide (2020 Updated by NTV)

Leesa vs Purple | Ultimate Mattress Review Guide

Hey how’s it going! Today we’ll be putting two ultra popular online brands head-to-head: Leesa and Purple.

There is just so much marketing material out there for all these online brands trying to sway you one way or the other and to be honest, it’s pretty much all noise. That’s where we come in.

We’ll just go over all the big practical reasons you might want to get a Purple mattress over Leesa and vice versa, things like: construction, feel, firmness, pricing and one or two X-factors.

Now I should mention that both Leesa and Purple make other mattresses but we’ll be focusing on their flagship models: the original Purple and the Leesa mattress.

Anyway, I hope this post is helpful for you. If it is, give us a thumbs up. Let’s get into it.

POLICY

So let’s kick this thing off by just going over all the policy information for both Leesa and Purple. Luckily for us, it should be the exact same for both brands.

You’ll get totally free shipping. Leesa ships to you in a box, Purple ships to you in a bag but it doesn’t matter because the process is the exact same. You bring it inside, you rip off all the packaging, you unroll it and voilà, a brand new mattress.

You also get a hundred nights with both brands to test out the mattresses in the comfort of your own bedroom to decide if it’s really the bed for you. You’re not trying it for 30 minutes inside of a store, you get it in your own home for more than three months which is pretty remarkable.

If in those first hundred nights you decide it’s not really the mattress for you, you just send it back and you get a full refund. You don’t even have to ship it back, there’s actually a lot of confusion out there about how to return a bed: do I need to keep the box or the packaging, how am I gonna fit it back into the box… instead they’ll usually send out a local charity that will pick up the mattress for you. You don’t have to do a thing but answer the door. But if you end up loving the mattress and keep it, both are backed by 10 year warranties.

So that’s all the policy stuff and it’s all pretty standard for the online mattress industry.

ABOUT LEESA AND PURPLE

IN COMMON

Let’s get into what else they have in common starting with their respective firmness levels.

Both Leesa and Purple are right about a flat medium on our firmness scale which means they should work for all sleeper types: back, stomach, side and combination. A lot of brands go with a medium firmness on their flagship mattress because they’re trying to appeal to a wide range of sleepers and it makes a lot of sense. If you’re looking for something especially firm or soft, these might not be your favorite picks. But we do think both Leesa and Purple will work for the vast majority of sleepers out there.

Both Leesa and Purple also don’t have coils, this means they probably won’t be great options if you’re a heavier person like 230 plus pounds or so. We pretty much always recommend coils for heavier people for more long-term support and durability over the long run.

So that’s all the stuff they have in common.

DIFFERENCE

Let’s start getting into why they’re different.

They’re both pretty different when it comes to their construction which leads to them having totally different feels.

Leesa starts with a dense layer of support foam. On top of that you have a transition layer of memory foam that adds a bit more pressure relief and helps make sure that you don’t feel the dense foam underneath. Then its primary comfort layer is a soft neutral foam called LSA200 foam, this stuff is super light, airy and quite a bit more responsive than a memory foam. It almost looks like a marshmallow and if you press down on it, it pops back into shape very quickly.

Leesa’s construction adds up to it having a soft neutral foam feel. When you lay down on Leesa, it doesn’t really feel anything specific like a memory foam or a latex foam. We sometimes say beds like Leesa are bland but that’s not a bad thing. I would say that 80 to 90 percent of people who lay down on Leesa will think it’s comfortable or at least not uncomfortable. On the whole, I would say that Leesa is the more accommodating mattress of the two because Purple has a totally unique feel that you’re not really gonna find on any other mattress out there.

The construction of Purple is kind of similar. It has a base layer of support foam, a transition foam but on top you have the “Purple grid” which is what makes Purple beds so special. It’s made of a material called hyper-elastic polymer – a gel material that somehow soft and firm at the same time.

If you lay on your back or your stomach, it almost feels like you float on top of it but it still provides great pressure relief for your hips and shoulders. If you lie on your side, it’s not gonna feel like any kind of foam or pillow top you’ve ever laid on before. We often say that it feels like one of those Dr. Scholl’s insoles that you put inside your shoes for extra comfort but the size of an entire mattress.

Pretty much everyone thinks Purple beds are really comfortable but since it’s so unique, it can be a bit divisive. If you’re looking for something totally new, that’s Purple.

Let’s talk about temperature regulation really quickly.

We do think that both Leesa and Purple sleep temperature neutral but we also think Purple will get the edge as far as hot sleepers are concerned. We don’t think you’ll be sleeping hot because you’re sleeping on a Leesa mattress but if you look at Purple from the top down, you can see that there’s basically no surface area. There’s just a ton of little pockets of air to flow through the mattress and the material itself doesn’t really retain heat. It’s just great for hot sleepers.

PRICE

Now let’s talk about price for both Leesa and Purple.

Leesa Price
Leesa Price

They’re both in a similar range but Leesa should be your more affordable option. A queen size Leesa mattress has an MSRP of about 1000 bucks but it is on discount pretty much year-round, right now they’re offering about 20% off the mattress which should bring it down to about 800 bucks.

Purple on the other hand has an MSRP of about 1100 bucks and it doesn’t go on discount too often, maybe around major holidays but more often than that,  they’ll bundle in free sheets or pillows or something like. I do like to remind people that mattress brands will play around with pricing from time to time. Leesa should be your more affordable option but they’re roughly in the same bracket as far as price is concerned.

OVERALL

That’s pretty much Leesa and Purple and it’s really coming down to the answer to one simple question: what sort of feel do you prefer?

Do you want just a simple comfy foam bed? That’s Leesa.

Do you want to try something totally new and unique? That’s Purple.

If you try out either mattress and you don’t like it, you can just return it. That’s the best part about buying a bed online.
